WHY?
Between 2000 and 2011 TUITION has NEARLY TRIPLED. STUDENT LOAN DEBT is up 500% since 2000 to $830 BILLION nationally. In the last four years California SCHOOL FUNDING has been CUT by 23%.

WHERE IS THAT MONEY GOING?
Not to students. UC administrators LAY-OFF PROFESSORS, INCREASING CLASS SIZES and making MORE WORK for LOW-WAGE TAs and contract faculty.
UC Regents keep increasing the number of managers and executives, and their salaries. In fact, ON MONDAY the REGENTS VOTED TO INCREASE the SALARY of 10 ADMINISTRATORS AND MANAGERS, including MEREDITH MICHAELS, VICE CHANCELLOR of PLANNING and BUDGET at UC IRVINE who will now be paid 9.9% MORE, $247, 275.!!!

For two afternoons, Thursday Dec. 1, 11am til dark and Friday Dec. 2, 11am til whenever, WE WILL WORK in FULL VIEW of the administration, right outside Michaels’ office and others.’

OPEN MELODY: TODAY!

For this weekend, at least. Open Melody is an all-day music and art festival this Saturday, brought to you by UC Irvine-based happening makers Acrobatics Everyday. 2011 marks the festival's second iteration and the first time everything has been densly and intensely packed into one day. Headlining things is the enigmatic, world-class guitarist Sir Richard Bishop--not only an extraodinary player but founding member of Arizona's hallowed desert trailblazers Sun City Girls.

Another school year means another slate of underground and unexpected concerts at UC Irvine courtesy of the Acrobatics Everyday crew, with mid-November being the time when another Open Melody festival takes place. And, unlike something like, say, Playground Festival or Monster Massive, this is actually happening and starting tomorrow at 3 p.m. on campus.

PHYSICS ON THE FRINGE

institute for figuring director and hyperbolic crochet coral reef maker margaret wertheim has a new book out as of yesterday. check it out! from the IFF:

For the past fifteen years, Margaret has been collecting the works of 'outsider physicists' – people with little or no scientific training who spend their lives inventing alternative theories of the universe. In this ground-breaking study, Wertheim follows the adventures of Jim Carter – the Leonardo of outsider scientists – as he develops his ideas about gravity and the structure of matter using a disco fog machine to make giant smoke rings.

Beginning with the life of one idiosyncratic individual, the book opens out to fundamental questions about the role of theoretical physics in the imaginative landscape of our time. Wertheim draws a parallel between the emergence of outsider artists in the early twentieth century and the burgeoning community of outsider physicists today. Deeply human and literally fantastical, "Physics on the Fringe," challenges our conception of what science is, how it works, and who it is for.
